February is Heart Month is an annual opportunity for individuals, groups, and businesses to raise funds and awareness for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

In 2023, our community raised over 1.2 million dollars, smashing past records thanks to our incredible match sponsors and donors. We are grateful to have the support of over one hundred community initiatives throughout February.

This February the Light the Capital Red initiative returns. Help amplify and highlight the importance of the Institute’s work by lighting up your windows, homes, and businesses with a red glow across Ottawa. About the Institute

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute has flourished into one of Canada’s most distinguished heart health centres for the unparalleled care it provides to its patients, a world-renowned research Institute that brings science from bench to bedside, and the country’s main influencer when it comes to preventing heart disease. It operates Canada’s largest comprehensive cardiac prevention and rehabilitation program, and handles over 221,000 patient visits a year.

Almost five decades of excellence in cardiac care at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (est. 1976):

1984

UOHI performed the first heart transplant in Ottawa

1989

Performed a transplant on an 11-day old infant, the youngest in Canada

2012

In just 24hrs it performed the 498th, 499th, and 500th transplants

2014

Launched the first Women's Heart Health Centre in Canada

2018-2020

Built a state-of-the-art critical care facility and patient care system

Our 2024 Heart Month Ambassador​

We’re honoured to introduce Dr. Rob Beanlands, MD, FRCPC, as our 2024 Heart Month Ambassador. Dr. Beanlands is the Deputy Director General, and Incoming President & CEO of the Ottawa Heart Institute.

He is the recent recipient of the uOttawa Award of Distinction Lifetime Achievement award. An international leader in cardiovascular nuclear imaging and the founding director of the UOHI’s national cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) centre, the first PET facility in Canada dedicated to cardiovascular disease. He is a professor in the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine with cross appointments in the Department of Radiology and the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
